Gone is the Romance That Was So Divine...

The ballad of Nannette and Nathaniel is a tragic tale of betrayal and passion. Two lovers who were the complete opposite, but carried the same heart. A buffalo and a kangaroo, a man and a lady.

Everyone has a different story on how the two met. Nathaniel was a renowned musician and Nanette was a piano maker's assistant. One thing all can agree on is where they met- in Abbesses, Paris. The union was not so instant. Nanette's best mate, Goatie, recalls Nathaniel secretly watching Nanette with heart- shaped pupils everyday when she would go outside to have a smoke. He never had the courage to go up to her because of her sheer beauty and his previous luck with females. Goatie would point Nathaniel out to Nanette and giggle-but he stayed frozen filled with shyness.

Eventually after many smoke breaks and staring phases, the two were brought together. The couple of all couples. Sexy, snappy, and the envy of everyone, including a very slutty worm named Misty Beethoven. The once shy and introverted Nathaniel became a bit of a "taken" sex symbol for he treated his Nanette with spoken for eyes and a shield of love. They would go dancing and clear the floor, and escape to the hills where they would chat, laugh, and who knows what else!

Time went by fast. Temptation became an issue down the line when Misty Beethoven yielded her wormlike skills onto Nathaniel one dark night after a large consumption of absinthe shots. Nathaniel was beyond, still mortified he kept his mouth shut.

Word travels fast unfortunately in place des Abbesses, and Nanette was informed of the one night stand. Forgiveness is not a factor after your lover has committed betrayal and lack of trust. Nanette had to leave the Abbesses and her love. Feeling tricked and sick to his belly, Nathaniel poisoned himself and died a week later. For he just couldn't be able to live with the fact that he cheated on his own heart...

About Birdie

Described as: 'a fashion label filled with grace and fun that's also extremely whimsical and sexy'. Nick Wakeman was inspired, she says, by memories of an innocent era in the early seventies when she grew up in suburban England. "My mum made all my clothes and I always looked a bit sharper than my mates, I was matched and co-ordinated in stripe and print", says Nick. "Everything was gathered and smocked, with puffed sleeves, jade buttons from Hong Kong, and satin ribbon bows on every dress. Imagine this mixed up with home made and hand printed stars and stripes dungarees (with flares of course) and you'll get an idea of where my aesthetics come from. She says: "birdie is my modern and wearable take on all those obsessions."

The current summer 2005 collection features off beat colours, stripes, lots of print and a tragic love story about a buffalo and a kangaroo who live in Paris. Nick laughs: "It may seem odd but it actually it gave me great inspiration for a wearable and fun, yet romantic summer collection.
