A Creative Response |
In response to the recent tsunami disaster in Asia, i Lovedust took it upon themselves to organize Designed to Help. "We wanted to produce a book of graphic design/art and illustration that would be sold to raise money for charities working for victims of the tsunami; just a simple initiative to allow the design communities to apply their talents and do their bit." explains i Lovedust's intent, posted on the Designed to Help home page. Soon after initial contacts were made by i Lovedust, the effort snowballed into action. The message of Designed to Help's concept and need for both publication and distribution grants quickly networked itself through the international web of design and art. Designed to Help links and logos became the new standard on countless art and design community home-pages, binding both professionals and amateurs together. |
"The response has been OVERWHELMING. So many designers and artists have contacted us! Our inboxes are overflowing and the phone has not stopped ringing." stated an email sent to project participants and donators. Only a few days into the project, i Lovedust was negotiating distribution and printing proposals with Magma books and Die-Gestalten Verlag. The Designed to Help home page-list of participants seemed to double everyday and what had begun as a simple concept with a list of contacts became a reality. "It became very clear, very quickly, that literally hundreds of people wanted to actively do something for the cause. Scores and scores of emails came in with people offering work and other support. Then the project received a further boost when the publishers, Die Gestalten Verlag stepped forward to take on the mammoth task of editing, producing and distributing the book worldwide. Such amazing generosity." stated the Designed to Help home page news section after notice of DGV's sign-on to the project. |
With the support of Berlin publisher, Die Gestalten Verlag, Designed to Help will soon be a physical, 24 x 30 cm, 300 page, hardcover book with worldwide distribution. However, even though this news is exciting and the effort a success, victims of the disaster still need help. The most immediate way to help the tsunami appeal is to donate money. Go to The Tsunami Earthquake Appeal home page, www.dec.org.uk to pledge your support. Even better, the next best thing to pledging directly would be to buy a copy of the book. Not only will the proceeds from your purchase go to relief work, but you will in return receive an awesome book with some of the best juried design and art work from around the world.
